Terrarium 0.1 was an IOT (Internet of Things) project established between Universcience in France and Cluj Cultural Centre as part of the France-Romania season. Scientifica facilitated the implementation of this project in two phases: building up a fully automated terrarium and setting up an open source application for measuring and controlling it.
At the end of the project we published the open source documentation for building up your own terrarium at home.

The first part of the project took place between 19th to 23rd March 2019 and consisted of a FabLab residency of two Romanian Biologists from the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Cluj-Napoca. Together with the Carrefour Numérique team, they worked inside Universcience’s own Fablab on building up a fully automated terrarium. Once The Terrarium was in place, we were able to check & register the parameters of soil & air humidity, air temperature & ventilation as well as the light-intake of the terrarium with an automatized system for watering, heating/ cooling, lighting, and air flow.
The second part of the Terarium 0.1 project was concerned with setting up an open source application for measuring and controlling the Terrarium remotely and finding out what are the optimal humidity, temperature and light values for a favorable plant growth, how do plants affect each other, what can you do to keep your plants green?
In this phase, we organized a one day Hackathon on the 22nd of June in Cluj-Napoca, Romania and called out for talented and enthusiastic biologists, designers and developers. We had four great mentors prepared to help & unite the great minds present:
